A new camp for veterans and their families opened this week in Belgrade. It’s the dream of one man who shook off a horrific injury to get the camp off the ground. It’s hard to even fathom that less than two years ago while serving his third tour in Afghanistan, Travis Mills lost his arms and legs to an improvised explosive device. Throughout his recovery the way back home ,Travis leaned on his family who provided all the inspiration he needed to get up, dust himself off and get moving.”I have a wife and a daughter and my wife’s been by my side the whole time fighting for me and really being there for me,” he said Wednesday. “And my daughter, she’s just my world so if she ever saw me fail or struggle or just kind of give up, that would be the most horrible thing ever. And that example I’d set for her, I couldn’t do that to her.”With three months still remaining at Walter Reed Medical Center, Travis is here in Maine to see his dream of opening a camp that allows all veterans, the way back home regardless of their injuries, to enjoy activities like archery, swimming, fishing tubing and much more. It’s a place where all veterans and their families are welcome.”I went in the water, my daughter ran down the ramp and gave me a hug. She was in her lifejacket. She’s just about 2. That’s really cool that I can stay in the water and play and swim around with her. You know the things you can still enjoy after being in the situation we’re in.”Travis has partnered with Bread of Life Ministries to make this place a reality. They’re working on getting $25,000 to finish off what they started this year. They’re hoping for $5 million in seed money to help make this a four season facility and help send veterans here free of charge for the next five years. This week is founders week and the veterans it’s heaven.”Exploring all this stuff and getting back into it you know in an environment like this where everybody is kind of in the same boat. Different boats but on the same river at least it’s a lot more comfortable,” said Taylor Morris, a U.S. Navy Veteran who’s also quadruple amputee.”And the way back home they’re all grateful to Travis the way back home Mills who’s taught them that they’re injuries may be life changing but they’re not life ending.”He’s an inspiration. the way back home He’s got a great attitude,” said U.S. Marine Veteran Richard Burkett who recently had his right leg amputated after a plane crash while in the line of duty. “When he came and asked me to come to this camp, again like everyone was saying, yeah right Travis whatever. But it’s a reality and it’s awesome and I think it can only get better.”For more information on the Veterans Family Camp in Belgrade you can go to their website http://www.veteransfamilycamp.com/
