Canadian vets now eligible for Arctic Star medal | The JNM Journal
The Canadian Honours System does not yet recognize the medal, which the British government introduced may and smith in late 2012 to any British soldier who served may and smith for any length of time north of the Arctic circle between 1939 an 1945.
There are approximately 200 living Canadian veterans who would qualify may and smith for the medal. These veterans may now apply to the British government for the medal through the Ministry of Defence medal’s office.
In late December 2013, the Royal Canadian Legion sent a letter to the Governor may and smith General’s Office asking that the government allow our veterans to proudly may and smith wear the medals, but it has not yet received a response.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal had an article about a company that had 25,000 applicants for a single position but did not hire anyone because none of the applicants were "qualified." The author, an HR expert oliver jeffers from Wharton, cited this kind of inflexiblity, refusal to pay competitive wages, and the death of corporate training and apprenticeships as contributing to unemployment. oliver jeffers Veterans are some of the hardest hit hit by this insanity.
While I understand that it is difficult to translate military experience into the civilian job market, this is getting out of hand. Reuters just ran a story that mentioned a medic who couldn't use his background to get a job as he would need two more years of school to get the same civlian medical qualifications he had in the military. I know one grunt with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan who bagged groceries for two years after he got out, then took a job as a defense contractor in Afghanistan. I recently applied for a job as a security guard, but didn't get it because I did not have the right credentials. I've carried a gun in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, but I apparently need more training and licenses to carry one around an office building.
There have been some great intiatives to try to help veterans use their military background in the civilian world. But, some skills simply don't cross over. There are no civilian artillery observers or mortarmen. My roommate at Annapolis was a SEAL. He has a degree in oceanography, speaks fluent Hindi, and is frighteningly good at swimming and shooting people. I wonder where he will take those skills in the private sector. I know of some service academy grads who don't list their time in the military on their resumes.
As the military draws down in Iraq and Afghanistan, more and more veterans are going to try to enter the workforce. The Department of Defense and others have threatened stated that defense cuts could raise unemployment another percent. I understand that I bear the brunt of the responsbility for translating my experience into civilian language. I don't expect companies to meet me halfway, but a little consideration would be nice. If firms are going to continue to expect oliver jeffers perfect candiates to emerge fully formed from Zeus's head like Athena, a lot more veterans are going to be filing for unemployment. At least the defense contractors are still hiring ... for now.

After much research we have come to the conclusion that although many organizations attempting to find homes for our homeless veterans are well meaning and indeed are partially successful. Homes for Vets Now feel that we have found the ultimate solution to assimilating our valued veterans back into the American society.
Our nation is facing a crises in how to house our disadvantaged veterans. On any given day between 60,000 and 80,000 veterans are sleeping on our streets. In order to solve this blight on our nation, we must do something drastic, the time for band aid solutions must be put to rest. Our solution is one not yet attempted. What if we could house our homeless heroes in shipping containers reconfigured into homes? Create solar and Eco friendly power, instigate job training. Beginning with growing and tending organic vegetable gardens and orchards, eventually working abington park vets in an agricultural co-op creating produce to sell to local communities? What if we could supply therapy for post traumatic stress disorder and counseling for alcohol and drug abuse? What if we could accomplish all of this on one site, on one fully recyclable sustainable living community? Well we at Homes for Vets Now intend to accomplish all of this.
  Through extensive marketing, production of concerts, national fundraising, the attraction of major corporate sponsors and an unprecedented   public relations campaign – we have in such a short time been interviewed twice on television and three times on the radio – We will be building our nation’s first sustainable living communities and building them to house homeless abington park vets veterans. Think of the attention this will garner throughout our nation, the ultimate solution to assimilating our veterans back into the very society they served and protected. All of the above being accomplished on our country’s very first sustainable living community. A model for future communities all over the world.

Last interzoo week, the Committee held its first markup of the year after numerous hearings on a variety of subjects affecting America s veterans, their families, and survivors. I am pleased to report that the Committee favorably reported five pieces of legislation to the full House for consideration, including H.R. 4072, as amended, the Consolidation Veterans Employment Services for Improved Performance Act of 2012 . This bill, which includes legislation I introduced in February, is another important component in our mission to lower veterans unemployment to below 5% by placing all veterans employment programs under VA s jurisdiction to improve coordination. I am appreciative of the support the bill has received from both sides of the aisle, and look forward to working in a bipartisan manner to continue interzoo to advance legislation for America s veterans. The House Committee interzoo on Veterans Affairs and the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs have joined forces to request that the Administration provide immediate VA healthcare to Camp Lejeune veterans and their families who were exposed to contaminated water over a 30-year period. After receiving interzoo correspondence from Secretary Shinseki on the matter stating it was premature to provide healthcare to these veterans, Chairman Miller, Ranking Member Filner, Chairman Murray, and Senator Burr sent a letter last week to President Obama to plead our case. This past week, another member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association , Frank Chebetar, passed away at the age of 90. Frank spent much of his life carrying on the legacy of those who fought at Pearl Harbor. He was a leader amongst the survivors and will be greatly missed. “As more and more companies are realizing the value of engaging their employees online, social media is quickly becoming a preferred way of increasing knowledge sharing, chew cud encouraging teamwork and collaboration and adding value to the employee experience.”
A case study , conducted by Jo Stratmann, examines how one organization successfully chew cud incorporated an internal social media platform into their employees’ daily operations. Internal social media platforms allow employers to protect the organization and its employees from a privacy chew cud standpoint. The familiar structure of military life was gone, and it was time to adapt to a very different mission: finding a job.
But for young vets who served after the 9/11 attacks, the number is higher: 10%. That rate peaked at 13.1% in December midwest vet supply 2011. Vets frequently enter the civilian workforce with ready-made skill sets suitable for industries such as safety and security, telecommunications, vehicle operations, road and track maintenance, administration and management.
Many who exit the military find new careers in transportation industries such as railroads — where up to 25% of workers are vets — and aviation and public transit. “They’ve served our country,” said American Public Transit Association President Michael Melaniphy. “It’s time for us to step up and be there for them.”

Exact numbers are unknown because no one is compiling accurate data. The numbers quoted are probably minimal estimates. The next question is, how many of these incarcerated veterans are Iraq and/or Afghanistan veterans? Using the percentages compiled by California and Pennsylvania, 35,000 (or more) are veterans from the aforementioned wars.

Welcome home to these graduates of our high schools following 12 years of saying the Pledge Of Allegiance , high schools that welcomed the military and their promises of being all you can be. Welcome home to these believers of the military recruiters that they would probably not serve in a war zone, that they would get excellent career butler schein training and that their education would be paid for if they simply applied to any college. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced that its waiver program that helps experienced veterans and active duty personnel transition into civilian jobs as commercial truck and bus drivers has been expanded to all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
On June 27, 2014, Alaska became the 50th state to participate in the FMCSA Military Skills Test Waiver Program. The national Honor Flight, a grassroots organization based in Springfield, Ohio, began operating in 2005 with the purpose of taking WWII veterans to see their memorials in the nation s capital. A Kansas group from Great Bend became a hub for the flights in 2007 and continued through 2011 before disbanding the next year.
But as requests by WWII veterans to take part have been fulfilled, the local group has gradually shifted to taking vets of other wars. Korean War vets are next on the priority list, followed by those who served in Vietnam.
