Alzheimer's disease has recently escalated into the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. as five million people currently living with the disease, which causes an expenditure of 210 billion dollars in annual healthcare costs. To conduct their study, the researchers looked at 17 participants with mild cognitive injury damaged, an early form of memory loss that is believed to be a precursor to Alzheimer's disease and compared them with 18 control group members. Both groups had similar age, sex, education, genetic risk and used similar drugs. The head of the research team, Dr. J. Carson Smith concluded "We found that after 12 weeks of being in a moderate exercise program, study participants improved their neural efficiency ... basically everyone was using less neural resources to perform the same memory task. There are no studies showing that a drug can do what we have shown is possible with exercise. " The study results were achieved with moderate physical activity, thirty minutes a day for five days a week.
