The trend towards better animal welfare in different countries follows the same pattern. It is therefore important to find out at what stage a country is, to find the right methods for improving farm animal terms. It recognizes researchers in a new report and presents also an important tool for working strategically to improve animal welfare in the EU. How the animals on the farm are doing has no direct relation to the regulations concerning animal welfare in the country. smith and The differences between how the animals are doing in different countries, in addition to differences in laws and regulations depend on citizens and consumers awareness, merchants smith and and non-profit organizations position, farmers' knowledge and awareness, and much more.
The most effective tools for improving animal welfare therefore depends on where one is in which country and in what context. It recognizes smith and researchers in the EU project smith and EconWelfare, in a recent article in the international scientific journal Animal Welfare. Despite the differences in practice it has been seen that animal welfare policies in different countries developed according to a single curve, which consists of five steps towards better smith and animal welfare.
- There is nothing particularly "European approach" on welfare without different cultures with different norms, values and aspirations of these issues. Which ones are the most appropriate and effective measures to improve conditions smith and depends on where you are in the discussion of animal welfare in the country, says Linda Keeling, professor of animal welfare at SLU and the leader of that part of EconWelfare dealing with animal welfare policy.
Therefore, it is unlikely that one can find a uniform solution to promote animal welfare across the EU. But the researchers offer in their report is a tool to identify what stage a country is to be able to deploy the right resources where needed and can make a difference.
Roadmap for Animal Welfare In their study, the researchers carried out analyzes in eight European countries. The result is a conceptual framework, a "road map for animal smith and welfare." The issues to stakeholders in the study focused on the experience of the level and importance of farm animal smith and welfare in each country and how pressure from above created to improve animal welfare. For every step towards better animal welfare scientists have also identified specific policy instruments, together with the stakeholder groups most influential right there. smith and
- Sweden is one of the countries smith and that regulate animal welfare issues mainly through legislation, while in places like the UK have chosen to develop certification and labeling of goods in order to create public opinion and change, says Linda Keeling.
As for Sweden's development looks a bit different than the other countries surveyed. Before Sweden joined the EU had already raised the level of legislation on animal smith and welfare here and we are far ahead of other countries in that way. But there are still very few products on the market that focuses on just that - where Sweden has not progressed very far.
EconWelfare is a European research project which aims to provide proposals for national and European politicians and officials to improve animal welfare in agriculture. This project is a collaboration between researchers in the Netherlands, UK, Spain, Italy, Macedonia, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland. SLU is responsible for that part of the project dealing with the development of policies and monitoring. Linda Keeling from SLU is also the coordinator of the Centre of Excellence smith and in Animal Welfare Science. Read more at: www.slu.se / animal welfare
